This quote from some commentator is perfect to describe how the Republican party leaders squelched any dissent.
"And so begins the end of the Republican Party. The tent keeps getting smaller... Don't worry Democrats. Your house of cards will collapse as well. Too many disassociated special interest groups to appease and not enough room to add debt to buy new voters."

Former New Hampshire governor John Sununu presided over a voice vote on controversial changes to the party rules. Again, Ron Paul supporters and other opponents of the changes, which give more power to the presidential nominee, objected loudly.
